History spans here from the Celts and the Etruscans to today, through the Romans, the Lombards, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, the Sforza and Farnese families, the domination of the Savoy princes, the Venetians, the Austrians, and also Napoleon and his former wife. It is not surprising that the 11 cities in the Valle del Po richly testify to ancient civilizations and art, from Roman ruins to medieval churches, from Renaissance jewels to Baroque palaces. Some of these are so beautiful that they are part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is a pleasure to discover them as you walk by the ancient and well-preserved historic centres. The cultural life of the city is also very lively: theatre stages host world-famous artists in the field of music, drama, and opera.
